Icon Apprenticeship
Looking for an Iconography Apprentice
Are you interested in an Iconography Apprenticeship program? Agape Sacred Art is offering an apprenticeship program in icon painting beginning in the fall of 2018. In order to apply, you must fulfill the following criteria:
- Be a resident of New Jersey.
- Have some prior iconography experience. You should have completed at least two icons.
- Be able to commit to a weekly three hour class.
- Be committed to a rigorous study program that includes homework and reading assignments.
- Qualify for a NJ Council on the Arts – Folk Arts Apprenticeship Grant.

The iconography apprenticeship program is an intensive and complete study in the art of icon painting and iconology. Students will complete at least two icons during the apprenticeship year. Additionally, the apprentice will conduct research and study in:
- The drawing and composition of icons
- The symbolism of icons
- Icon history
- The theology of the icon
- Survey the various schools of iconography (i.e. regional and historic styles)
- Iconographic canon
This program is a comprehensive study of iconography, and will prepare the apprentice for a career as a professional iconographer.
